Canincgcmedale Good Citizen Testing - To be offered at Nov. Show
AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you'll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog.

Canincgcmedale Good Citizen Testing - Coming Soon

President's Message - Spring 2014

Hope everyone has survived the wild winter here in East Tennessee and Mother Nature will be much
kinder to as spring rolls in. There have been many things going on inside our club and it is a very exciting time for us as we continue to grow and expand.

First I would like to thank Beth White and all of her help for putting on two great weekends of Agility
Trials in December and February. They were very well run, attended, and profitable. Beth continues to
shine for us as we attempt to continue to grow our performance area within the club.

As many of you know performance events have been an area that the board has been trying to improve club participation in for a long time. Recently due to the hard work of Keith Bailey, Beth White, and Ace Russell TVKC was able to secure the use of the new arena facilities at UT Veterinary School. This has enabling TVKC to better serve all our members and the dog community in general by allowing us to provide some type of agility classes and training area. We are also now using an adjacent area for conformation classes, puppy kindergarten classes and we are planning basic obedience classes with Janis Flaherty, Richella Veatch and other stepping up to plate to get these things going. All of the classes take place on Monday nights at UT and you can find a current training schedule and information on our TVKC.org web site.   Click Here for the entire text.

Proposal of the Group Realignment Committee
The American Kennel Club Board of Directors voted to accept and approve the report of the Group Realignment Committee. The rule changes necessary to implement going from 7 to 11 groups will be read at the December, 2011 Delegate Meeting for a vote in March, 2011. The final decision on assigning breeds rests with the AKC Board, which will consider the input of the breed parent clubs. If adopted, these changes would become effective in 2015.

TRAINING SEMINARS

OBi Fox TRAINING AND PROBLEM SOLVING FUN DAY!   OBi Fox will give us a short presentation on her knowledge and research about  a dog’s personal space and innate motor response.  The rest of the day we will spend learning how to apply this concept in training/handling and problem solving.  Saturday, October 1, 2011, 9:00am - 5:00pm, A Good Dog's Life, Asheville, NC   www.agooddogslife.com

Diane Bauman Advanced Problem-Solving Clinic, 10/29/11 and 10/30/11 9AM to 5PM, GreenBank Pavillion, Greene County Fairgrounds, Greeneville, TN.  By cleverly teaching in a relaxed atmosphere where "mistakes are good," dogs and humans learn by making decisions that are either rewarded or ignored. The end result are students (canine and human) that truly understand what they are doing and are happy, comfortable and enthusiastic about performing.

Additional details for seminars.

TSRTA
A local K9 search and rescue group was recognized for its efforts helping people in the community.

The American Kennel Club awarded the  Tennessee Special Response Team A a $2,000 grant during a ceremony on Tuesday night. The Special Response Team members and their dogs were called out 24 times during the past year to help find missing people.

The group also provides public programs so folks can better cope with natural and man-made disasters. "You go back to 9-11, you go back to Katrina, you go back to Oklahoma City and you hear all the stories about the dogs who found the people ten and twelve days later and it's because of these people that do the training that they are able to find the people and help them out," said President of the Tennessee Valley Kennel Club Walker Sommerfelt.

The grant is crucial for the search and rescue team because they are mostly made up of volunteers who need the financial support of organizations such as AKC to stay afloat.  Story posted on WBIR.com

Directions: From the Pellissippi Pkwy (I140) take Topside Rd exit (TN-333 S) heading southwest and will dead end at Louisville Rd, turn left, drive 0.7 miles and make a right onto Miser Station Rd.  Go 0.2 miles and take your first right onto Little Dug Gap Rd.  Countryside entrance will be on right.  Arena is located behind the barn to the left of the clinic office.

Note:
The training facility is a covered horse arena which has a sand/silicone surface - not ideal for training as it is not seen at an actual conformation show.  In the future, we hope to have a more typical training surface to work on.  If participation warrents, we can have additional classes from 7:45 until 8:45 or expand to two rings of classes.

RDORESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP DAYS

While September seems far away, it's never too early for us to start helping you plan for an exciting AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days event. In 2011, the program marks its ninth year and we encourage all AKC-affiliated clubs and dog-related organizations to hold a free community event publicly promoting responsible dog ownership anytime during the month of September.

Holding an AKC RDO Day event is easier than you think! All efforts are appreciated and welcomed, from hosting a public education table at a dog show or dog run to creating a day-long festival. The main AKC RDO Days web page includes many suggestions for events. The first 500 clubs and organizations that confirm event details with us by August 1, 2011 will receive a resource-filled packet.

dawnIn the News - Q&A: Dawn Darr, canine agility trainer and handler
How did you end up in agility training? I started learning about obedience training in 1995, with my first dog, Kirby, a Pomeranian. Then I ended up getting another dog, Skyler, a golden retriever, and I felt like she needed a different outlet. In June of 1999 we took our first agility class and in March 200 we were competing at our first trial; now I’m qualified to teach. I have a 6-year-old golden named Journey, who is currently ranked 15th among goldens competing in the country. She gives the Border Collies a run for the money—and I’m currently starting out my 9-month-old Pomeranian.

rdo3rdo1rdo2RDO 2010: The TVKC's Responsible Dog Ownership Celebration took place this weekend at the TVKC Harriman Agility Trail.  The information booth had many visitors including several members of the local community interested in owning their first dog or interested in dog training opportunities.  The highlight of the celebration was the "adoption" of Mrs. Rebecca Smallwood's Red Bird Mission School's 4th and 5th grade class of 19 students in Beverly, Ky.  Red Bird Mission has been providing services in an isolated, rural distressed area of Appalachian Mountains since 1921 where chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain provide obstacles to a fuller life for the residents of this area.  Mrs. Smallwood has a passion for teaching her students about Responsible Pet Ownership among many other things.  Many thanks to the event sponsors: Petsafe Invisible Fence, Hills Pet Food, ADT Security Systems.

Registering All Your Dogs Has Never Been More Important Each year AKC registrations continue to decline. You can do your part by ensuring that all the puppies you produce are registered with AKC. Details
